Jeff MacNelly

Jeffrey Kenneth MacNelly (1948-2000) was a famous American editorial cartoonist, widely considered to be one of the best editorial cartoonists of the modern era.

He began drawing editorial cartoons in 1969, for The Richmond News Leader . He moved to the Chicago Tribune in 1980, where he continued to work until his death. His strips would also be syndicated in papers all over the United States.

MacNelly's cartoons were known for their distinctive and detailed style, as well as their biting satire. He was neither a strong liberal nor conservative, but instead mocked all politicians. His artistic conventions have since been widely emulated by many contemporary cartoonists.

He won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning three times, in 1972, 1978, and 1985- a rare achievement. He won the Reuben Award for cartoonist of the year consecutively in 1978 and 1979.

Starting in 1977 he began to also draw a comic strip called Shoe, about a community of humanized birds. He also illustrated the columns of Dave Barry for many years.
