The Independent Democratic Union (Unión Demócrata Independiente, UDI) is Chile's most conservative political party. Its current president is Jovino Novoa . UDI and National Renewal (RN) form a coalition of right-wing parties called Popular Alliance.
The UDI presidential candidate for the 1999 election was Joaquín Lavín. He lost to a tight margin to PS/PPD candidate Ricardo Lagos in a runoff.
