Heartworm is a dog parasitoid. It is hard to eliminate and can be fatal; prevention, however, is easily achieved using monthly medication such as Interceptor® tabs. Heartworm symptoms usually can't be detected until advanced stages. Symptoms are similar to congestive heart failure and include coughing, difficulty breathing, lack of energy, etc.
