HeXen

HeXen: Beyond Heretic is a first-person shooter computer game developed by Raven Software, published by id Software, and distributed by GT Interactive beginning on October 30, 1995. It is the sequel to Heretic.

It uses a modified Doom engine, which allows (like in Heretic) up and down views, a network play with up to 8 players and the possibility of choosing between three character classes. Hexen also introduced the "hub system" of level progression in the genre of first-person shooter games. Unlike previous games, which had relied on midi for music, Hexen could also play tracks from audio CD.

An official expansion pack called Deathkings of the Dark Citadel was also released for Hexen, featuring 3 more hubs for a total of 20 new single player levels.

The source code of Hexen was published by Raven Software in 1999 which allowed the game to be ported to different platforms like Linux.

"Hexen" is also the German word for "witches".

* These are "Secret" bonus levels which require extra searching to find, and are not crucial to the gameplay.
** This level is also referred to as the "Monastery" by in-game messages.

Additionally, the 1.0 version of the game contains a level called "Maze". This level is incomplete and consists solely of moving walls; there is no exit. It is believed this was left in by accident and was removed in the 1.1 update. If you have an unpatched version, you can access this level with the warp 41 cheat code.
