Hafiz (Qur'an)

(Redirected from Hafiz)

Hafiz or Hafez (Arabic:حافظ), literally meaning 'guardian', is a term used by Muslims for people who have completely memorized the Qur'an. Those who are entitled to use the word are tested for the accuracy of their recall by being asked to continue the reading of a passage taken randomly from the Qur'an. Being a hafiz is considered one of the safest ways to preserve the integrity of the Qur'an.

The number of Hafiz currently in the world are estimated by some to be more than 10 million.

Hafiz or Hafezis also the name of Khwajeh Shams al-Din Muhammad Hafez-e Shirazi (also spelled Hafiz) (خواجه شمس‌الدین محمد حافظ شیرازی in Persian) a very important Persian poet. His tomb is in Shiraz.
