Guugu Yimidhirr (also Guguyimidjir, Kukuyimidir, Koko Imdudji, Gugu Yimijir, Guuguu Yimithirr) is an Australian Aboriginal language.
History
In 1770, words of Guugu Yimidhirr were written down when Captain Cook's ship the Endeavour was being repaired in northeast Queensland. This was the first European encounter with an Australian language.
Classification
Guugu Yimidhirr is Pama-Nyungan of the Yalandyic branch.
Examples
The English word kangaroo is a borrowing from Guugu-Yimidhirr gangurru (/ɡaŋʊrʊ/).
