Greater Hungary

Greater Hungary is a political goal of Hungarian revisionists , a political movement in Hungary, which want to restore borders of Hungary as they were before the Treaty of Trianon in 1920. Treaty of Trianon ensured legal existence of new independent Hungarian state and defined its borders. Before this peace treaty, Hungary was not independent state, but part of Habsburg Empire. Territorial size of Hungary within Habsburg Empire was larger then of the present day Hungary, but ethnic Hungarians were minority in that Hungary (less than 50%). So, Treaty of Trianon gives independence to Hungary (a goal for which Hungarians fought for centuries), and it also defined borders of new Hungarian state in the way that ethnic Hungarians become absolute majority in this country.

However, after the Treaty of Trianon, a political concept known as Hungarian revisionism became very popular in Hungary. Basically, the followers of this concept claimed that Treaty of Trianon was "injury" for Hungarian people. They created a nationalistic myth based on the Treaty of Trianon. Their political goal became the "restoration of borders of 1000 years old Hungary" (This was an historical fiction, since there was no independent Hungary between 1526 and 1918, and its borders had different shapes during the time). With the help of Adolf Hitler, the political goal of Greater Hungary was partially achieved during World War II, when Hungary occupied parts of neighbouring countries, which was followed by brutal crimes against the local non-Hungarian population. Yet, this was short-lived political and military achievement; after the war Hungary had to give back all occupied territories.

Hungarian revisionism still exists in present day Hungary, thought this political option does not have many followers. Hungarian revisionist organizations are similar to other neo-nazi political organizations in Europe. Their political concept is to create Greater Hungary, which would be ruled by "noble" Hungarians, while all other nationalities would be treated as minor races or slaves. Recently, Trianon movie was recorded in Hungary, and this movie was based on revisionist ideas. Movie was forbidden in Hungary, while people in neighbouring countries are very concern with the speech of hate against them in this movie.
