Immediately following World War II in the United States, the Gold Star Wives of America was formed to provide support for women that lost their husband in the War. A gold star signified there was a death of a loved one, and a silver star was given to those that had loved ones enlist in the war.
Gold Star Wives is still open to individuals whose spouse (husband or wife) died in active duty or from service related disabilities in the U.S. Armed Forces, from World War II to the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Iraq War and all others.
