Geography of Serbia

Serbia is located in the Balkans (a historical and geographical region of southeastern Europe) and in the Pannonian Plain (a region of central Europe). It shares borders with Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro (with which it forms the loose commonwealth of Serbia and Montenegro) and Romania. It is landlocked, although access to the Adriatic is available through Montenegro, and the Danube River provides shipping access to inland Europe and the Black Sea.

Terrain

Serbia's terrain ranges from rich, fertile plains of the northern Vojvodina region (save the Deliblatska Peščara , also called the last desert in Europe), limestone ranges and basins in the east, and in the southeast ancient mountains and hills. The north is dominated by the Danube River. A tributary, the Morava River flows through the more mountainous southern regions.

Climate

The Serbian climate varies between a northern continental climate with cold winters and hot, humid summers with well distributed rainfall patterns, and a more Adriatic climate in the south with hot, dry summers and autumns and relatively cold winters with heavy snowfall inland.
