Gampo Abbey

Gampo Abbey is a Buddhist abbey located in Pleasant Bay, Nova Scotia . It was founded by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in 1984 as a centre of North American Buddhism. Hundreds of his followers relocated from the United States to Nova Scotia in their pursuit of Enlightenment. Many returned to the United States because of the lack of available work in the Maritimes, but over one thousand followers still live in the province. The Abbey is associated with the Vajradhatu Buddhist Church of Canada and Shambhala International . Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche now serves as abbot.

On August 26, 2001, Nova Scotia's first stupa was consecrated at Gampo Abbey. It is a Stupa of Enlightment dedicated to world peace. It contains relics of the Abbey's founder Vidyadhara Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.
