Freetrade was an online discount securities brokerage service. With few exceptions, clients were allotted 20 commission-free online stock trades each month. This value proposition attracted a large number of individual investors considering the service never advertised itself. The service also contained costs by automating all possible account maintenance procedures and providing customer service exclusively via e-mail.
In November, 1999, Ameritrade Holding Corporation acquired the company which operated Freetrade.com. In March, 2005, Freetrade customers were notified that their accounts would be moving to the Ameritrade Izone service which charges $5.00 for most stock trades executed without the assistance of a broker.
