Free Tibet movement

The Free Tibet movement is a worldwide movement with the goal of helping Tibet separate from People's Republic of China, be it full Tibetan independence or true autonomy under the PRC. Many in the movement see the Government of Tibet in exile as the true leaders of the Tibetan people. Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, and thus the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, supports the movement. However, he points out that, in today's world, which country's borders the Tibetan people live within is not as important as whether or not they are truly free.

Criticism

Some have argued that the Free Tibet movement is wholly without cause. While many nations view the Dalai Lama as an important spiritual leader, none recognize his Government of Tibet in Exile. In addition, Tibetan society has seen prosperity under Chinese governance. The standard of living has gone up and a transition from an almost entirely farm based economy to a more diversified region have been a boon to many Tibetans. Some question whether this would have come about under a different government.
