Eleutheria i thanatos

Eleutheria i thanatos is the motto of the Hellenic Republic. It is pronounced el-ther-ee-a e than-at-es, meaning Liberty or Death. It arose during the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s, where it was a war cry for the Greek rebels, as Greece was formerly ruled by the Ottoman Empire. It was adopted after the Greek War of Independence. It is still used, even though the Hellenic monarchy was overthrown in 1974.
