Born in Tromsų, Norway, he immigrated to America at the age of seven. As a lawyer and a businessman he became a prominent member of the community in Minnesota. He was elected as a Representative in the U.S. Congress as a Democrat. He lost a subsequent election after being nominated for the Senate.
