Eggnog

Eggnog (or egg nog) is a type of milk-based punch belonging to the posset family. It originates in Europe and its name may have originated from grog or from a small drinking cup known as a noggin. Eggnog typically consists of milk, eggs, and sugar mixed together and may be served with or without added spirits. Other ingredients include spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, or allspice. Eggnog is typically served as a Christmas time drink. Although rarely as good as "homemade" recipes, ready-made eggnog containing alcohol and "just-add-alcohol" versions are available for purchase in a variety of stores. It is sometimes added as a flavouring to food or other drinks.

Ingredients

  • 8 fresh eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup white rum
  • 3 cups milk
  • 3 cups whiskey
  • 2 cups heavy/whipping cream
  • ground nutmeg to sprinkle on servings

Instructions

  1. Separate eggs into yolks and whites in separate bowls.
  2. Beat egg-yolks with 1/2 of sugar, set aside.
  3. Beat egg-whites until stiff, then mix in other 1/2 of sugar.
  4. Pour the yolks into the whites and mix together slowly.
  5. Stir in white rum slowly.
  6. Stir in milk slowly.
  7. Stir in whiskey slowly.
  8. Stir in 1/2 of cream slowly.
  9. Whip rest (1/2) of cream and fold in carefully.
  10. Serve at room temperature by ladling the eggnog into cups and sprinkling nutmeg on top.
