Edinburgh Pentlands was created as a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom at the general election of 1950 and was abolished at the general election of 2005. From 1999 to 2005 it had the same boundaries as the Scottish Parliament constituency of the same name. (See Edinburgh Pentlands).
At the time of its abolition the constituency covered the south western portion of the City of Edinburgh council area, including the wards named Balerno , Baberton , Colinton , Craiglockhart , Fairmilehead , Firrhill , Murray Burn , Parkhead , and Sighthill . South Morningside ward was split with Edinburgh South. The seat had an urban north and a suburban centre. The remaining area was rural, and ran into the Pentland Hills in the south.
In 2005 most of the constituency beame part of Edinburgh South West, with the exception of Fairmilehead and nearby areas, which went to Edinburgh South.
