Edinburgh Pentlands has been a constituency of the Scottish Parliament since 1999. Until 2005 it had the same boundaries as a constituency of the House of Commons of the UK Parliament. The House of Commons constituency had the same name. (See Edinburgh Pentlands (1950 - 2005)). It was abolished in 2005 and most of it became part of Edinburgh South West, with the exception of Fairmilehead and nearby areas, which went in to Edinburgh South.
The Scottish Parliament constituency covers the south western portion of the City of Edinburgh council area, including the wards of Balerno , Baberton , Colinton , Craiglockhart , Fairmilehead , Firrhill , Murray Burn , Parkhead , and Sighthill . The South Morningside ward is split with Edinburgh South. The seat has an urban north and a suburban centre. The remaining area is rural, and runs into the Pentland Hills in the south.
