Earl of Carlisle

The title of Earl of Carlisle has been created several times in the Peerage of England. The most recent creation was for Sir Charles Howard, a scion of the famous Howard family.

The subsidiary titles of the Earl are: Viscount Howard of Morpeth (created 1661) Baron Dacre of Gillesland (1482) and Lord Ruthven of Freeland (1651). The Viscomital title is the courtesy title of the eldest son and heir to the Earl, and is, along with the Baronial title, in the Peerage of England. The title Lord Ruthven is in the Peerage of Scotland.
