Harry Cooper (veterinarian)

(Redirected from Dr. Harry Cooper)

Harold Leonard Cooper, better known as Dr. Harry Cooper or simply ‘Dr. Harry’, is an Australian veterinarian, television personality and author.

Harry Cooper has worked in veterinary practice in the United Kingdom and Sydney, and in the tradition of vets such as James Herriot has written anecdotal books based on his life in practice.

Cooper grew up surrounded by animals. His parents bred dogs, birds and poultry. Dr. Harry has had a lifelong interest in horses, Greyhounds and birds. His wife, Janine Cooper, is an avid breeder of Miniature Fox Terriers. He and his wife still have many breeding animals on their Tasmanian property, and reportedly his favourite pets are his cat and his Border Collie.

Dr. Cooper began his media career in a veterinary segment on a morning television talk show in Sydney. Later he gained renown as the resident veterinarian on the long-running series Burke's Backyard . In 1993 he hosted his first series, Talk to the Animals , and then in 1997, the veterinary series Harry’s Practice , which was cancelled in 2003 despite consistently high ratings. Dr. Harry currently presents a veterinary segment on the lifestyle program Better Homes and Gardens . He is also an animal welfare advocate and public speaker, and is reputedly a keen gardener.

Dr. Harry Cooper should not be confused with the late Dr. Harry Spira, also an Australian veterinarian.
