Diplopia

Diplopia is a visual disorder that results in double vision, such that when the viewer looks at an object it seems as if there are two objects. It can arise when the eye muscles are not functioning as intended, and the eyes are not correctly aligned while focusing on an object. This binocular diplopia disappears when one eye is closed.

Diplopia can also appear in only one eye; this is called monocular diplopia. In that case, the multiple vision can be caused by defects in other parts of the vision system, such as the lens.

Binocular diplopia can be corrected, to a certain extent, with a prism. Although this correction can be a solution for double vision, it also introduces some chromatic aberrations, inextricably bound to prisms.

Temporary diplopia can also be caused by intoxication by alcohol or concussion.
