Detmold is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is the capital of the district of Lippe. Population: 80,000. Detmold was founded in 1263.
History
Middle Ages
Detmold was first mentioned in 783 as Theotmalli
In 1005, Tietmelli or Theotmalli gau was mentioned
In 1263, fortification by Bernard III of Lippe under the name 'Detmelle at the crossing of the Werre (Werreübergang ) of the old trade route from Paderborn to Lemgo and grant of municipal law.
In 1305, the population was reported as 305.
In 1547, a fire destroyed over 70 houses.
In 1550, Detmold became the residence of count Graf Simon III (Lippe) .
Modern Times
In the 17th century, small irregular timbered-framed houses were built on Adolfstrasst.
Friedrich Adolf put a city plan in the south started from 1701 and an additional channel was alter built. In 1720, Detmold was given permission for eliminating barriers and ditches which started in 1780 which gates and wall towers were torn down.
Until 1835, the city reached over 4,000 and was the largest in Lippe, 12,000 in 1900 and over 30,000 in 1950.
Until 1918, Detmold remained seat of the counts and from 1789 was the seat of the princes. Since 1972, Detmold became the seat of the Lippe district.
Municipal reform
In 1970, the regional reorganization joined 25 independent municipalities with Detmold.
