Delirious? are a Christian rock band from Littlehampton, West Sussex, England. The band consists of Martin Smith , Stewart Smith , Jon Thatcher , Tim Jupp , and Stuart Garrard . Delirious? is considered by many, as the greatest Christian band ever.
Delirious? gained success in 1997 following the release of their first album 'King of Fools', although they had been playing locally known as 'The Cutting Edge Band' for several years. They have subsequently become one of the most popular and well-known Christian rock groups, both in Britain and the USA. Tracks such as 'Deeper' and 'History Maker' have gained anthemic status and surface regularly at Christian youth events.
The band have found resistance in the mainstream due to their 'Christian' label, despite some positive reviews in the music press. Notably, singles from the 1999 album 'Mezzamorphis ' gained some British chart success (see below) but a refusal by the UK's pop station, Radio One, to playlist the band has, debatably, hindered their attempts to break the mainstream.
This continued with the second major mainstream attempt, 'Audio Lessonover?', in 2001. Interestingly, the album title 'Audio Lessonover' is also an anagram of 'Radio One Loves Us'.
Criticisms of Delirious? seem to cite a lack of overt Christianity in the more mainstream releases, wheras non-Christian fans can feel intimidated by more worship-orientated releases such as the 'Glo' album. Some believe the band has had a constant identity crisis, indecisive to whether they want to be a mainstream rock band or a worship group.
Delirious? can regularly be found playing Christian festivals, such as Greenbelt in the UK, as well as mainstream festivals (they have in the past played at Glastonbury). They have also been the support act for several notable bands/ artists such as Bon Jovi in 2001. In 2004, they joined with the Hillsong team at the Hillsong Conference to record the live album .
