Dance of Quebec

The Dance of Quebec is comprised of traditional group, couple, and solo dances as well as contemporary jazz, ballet, and modern dances.

Traditional

In late 17th century, the English country dances, the contredances, the cotillions, and the minuets were popular. The most known dance would be the bastringue . In the 18th century, the reels, the jigs were introduced to Quebec, from the British Iles and British colonies in America.

The quadrilles and the waltz started appearing in the 19th century, along with step-dancing (called la gigue in Quebec) and polka.

Conptemporary

Dance continues to evolve in Quebec today. Famous are Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal , Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal and the La La La Human Steps modern dance troup of choreographer Edouard Lock.
