Homer in the Iliad (ix. 529 ff) mentions the Curetes as a legendary people who took part in the quarrel over the Calydonian boar. Antiquity identified the Curetes as either Aetolians or Acarnanians (Strabo 462, 26), A stock in Chalcis in Euboea also represented them.
