Cotton diplomacy was present during the American Civil War. The South boldly overestimated the leverage cotton trade would give them with Britain. Over-confident that cotton would adhere Britain to their side, the confederate states depended on it. However, Britain had an enormous surplus at the beginning of the war and developed other sources in India and Egypt. Economic ties between the South and Britain were present however, as in the Trent Affair.
