Communist Party of Austria

The Communist Party of Austria (German: Kommunistische Partei Österreichs) is a communist party from Austria. It was established in 1918 and banned between 1933 and 1945, and it played an important role in the resistance against the Nazis and fascism. As of 2004, it has not more than 0.7% in recent elections and consists of communist hardliners as well as progressive young people trying to develop and establish new political models in society.

It published a newspaper called Volksstimme (now Volksstimmen) and stands in elections. In 2003 it received a very exceptional 20% of the vote in local elections in Graz. Otherwise, the Austrian communist party is considered a fringe movement of limited significance. At the recent National Council elections held on November 22 2002, the Austrian communist party reached 0.56% of the votes (27.568 of a total of 4.909.645 valid votes). This result is far from the limit of 4% that must be surpassed to obtain seats in the National Council.

It is part of the New European Left Forum (NELF) and the Party of the European Left.
