The Chasseurs d'Afrique (Hunters of Africa) were a light cavalry version of the French Foreign Legion, numbering 12 regiments by World War II. They historically were clothed in a blue uniform, thus earning them the nickname "Blue Butchers" by some of their opponents.
In addition to numerous campaigns in North Africa, these colorful regiments also served in the Crimean War, Franco-Prussian War, Indochina, France's invasion of Mexico and both World Wars. The Chasseurs won their greatest fame by securing the flank of Lord Cardigan during the ill-fated Charge of the Light Brigade.
Algerian independence brought an end to the corps in 1962, after over a century of service.
