Category:London squares

A London square is a small formal area of hard or soft landscaped open space, generally surrounded by roads and buildings on all sides. This type of space is most prevalent in central London, but squares are also found in the suburbs. Some squares such as Trafalgar Square, were built as public open spaces, but most of them originally contained private communal gardens for use by the inhabitants of the surrounding houses. Some of these gardens are now open to the public, but many are not. In London "square" is a generic term for such spaces, and many of them are not actually square, or even rectangular. Some have the word "square" in their name, but some do not.
