The Birmingham Redevelopment Plan is a huge, expensive redevelopment plan for Birmingham, UK. The main part of the actual plan was the new Bullring Shopping Centre. It cost £500 million and covered an area of six soccer pitches.
This plan involves the demolition of hundreds of housing areas and 1960's architecture, which was widely complained about and considered ugly and dirty by many. This means the entire redevelopment of Lee Bank and the creation of Yardley shopping area.
The latest and largest part of the plan is the Eastside. The Central Library is being moved there, which will result in it becoming the 10th largest library in the world, as well as that three massive towers are being built there. Another huge part is the construction of Beetham Tower which will be the second tallest building in Birmingham.
The Redevelopment programme will hopefully boost Birmingham's tourism and turn it into a landmark city. However, Birmingham City Council has been warned that doing this leaves an opportunity for architects to test some of their designs and in the end will become an "architectural dump".
