Berenice of Cilicia

Image:berenice_cilicia.JPG

Berenice (b. 28 AD ) was the daughter of King Herod Agrippa I of Judea. Like her brother, Agrippa II, she was a client queen, allowed to rule parts of the Roman empire in present-day Syria. She was married three times -- to Mark of Alexandria, then to her father's brother Herod of Chalcis, and then to King Polemo of Cilicia -- and was the long-time mistress of the Roman emperor Titus Flavius. When their liaison caused gossip, he had to be ordered by his father Vespasian to repudiate her. Titus wished to marry her, but in the end decided not to do so, because of the likely public outrage.
