Anti Revolutionaire Partij

The Anti-Revolutionaire Partij (Dutch for Anti Revolutionary Party) was the first Dutch political party. It was founded in 1879 as a protestant, anti-liberal party by Abraham Kuyper. The word Revolution in the name refers to the "liberal" French Revolution. Though the party normally did not have more than 10% of the vote, its influence was far greater. This can be explained by the political capacities of its most famous leaders Abraham Kuyper, Hendrikus Colijn, Jelle Zijlstra and Barend Biesheuvel, all of whom were prime minister. In 1980 the party merged with the catholic KVP and the protestant CHU into the Christen-Democratisch Appèl (Christian Democratic Appeal).
