Aegidius

For the Christian Saint Aegidius, of the 7th-8th century, see Saint Giles, and for the 13th century archbishop and theologist, see Giles of Rome.

Aegidius (unknown - 464) was the magister militum per Gallias during the reign of the Roman emperor Majorian, and in the chaos of Gaul in the middle of the fifth century preserved a Gallo-Roman rump state in the region surrounding Soissons. There is a tradition, dating from Gildas, that the Britons, having been deprived of Roman military protection after 410, wrote to a "Roman commander Agitus", who may be our Aegidius, or possibly Aetius. Aegidius was allied with Childeric I and on his death, which occurred in uncertain circumstances, was succeeded by his son Syagrius.

Aegidius (457-?) was a Roman-Frankish General and ruler. He is mostly known for his rebellion against Ricimer.
