Adelaide Railway Station is the central terminus of the Adelaide railway system. It is located at on the north side of North Terrace, west of Parliament House. The Adelaide Casino is located in part of the building that is no longer required for the station.
Adelaide does not have a city loop railway line, and all lines approach the station from the west, with no through lines. Almost all trains on the metropolitan network either depart from or terminate at Adelaide station. It has nine platforms, all with broad gauge track. It used to also be the terminus for country and interstate passenger trains. There are no longer any regular country train services in South Australia, and the interstate services now all operate on standard gauge, and terminate at the Keswick Rail Terminal instead.
Free bus services depart from North Terrace outside the station providing easy access to other parts of the city centre.
History
The Adelaide station building was built in the 1920s, replacing an earlier 1870s building on the site.
The station environs were substantially remodelled from 1984. This included reducing the number of platforms from thirteen to nine, creating the casino and building the Adelaide Convention Centre and Hyatt Hotel above the tracks and platform area.
